Dysphagia (Swallowing)
The UNCG Speech and Hearing Center provides evaluation and treatment for individuals experiencing difficulty with swallowing (dysphagia). Swallowing problems may affect eating, drinking, and taking medications safely and comfortably. Dysphagia can occur due to conditions such as stroke, neurological disorders, head and neck cancer, surgery, or aging. Services are designed to support adequate nutrition and hydration, reduce the risk of complications, and help individuals return to enjoyable and meaningful mealtime experiences.
What we offer:
- Comprehensive clinical swallowing evaluation to assess oral, pharyngeal, and functional swallowing abilities
- Written report summarizing findings, recommendations, and next steps
- Collaboration with medical providers for referrals to instrumental assessments (e.g., modified barium swallow study) when appropriate
- Evidence-based therapeutic interventions, including swallowing exercises, postural strategies, and safe swallowing techniques
- Diet and liquid modification recommendations when needed to support safe intake
- Education and training for clients and caregivers on safe swallowing, mealtime strategies, and risk reduction
- Functional, meal-based therapy to support carryover into real-life eating situations
- Individual therapy provided by trained graduate students under the supervision of an ASHA-certified speech-language pathologist
- Ongoing progress updates to monitor safety, tolerance, and functional improvement
