OVERVIEW

The UNCG Speech and Hearing Center provides evaluations and instructional services for adults with dialect or accent differences. Learning to “codeswitch” to Standard American English is the goal of dialect modification, whereas effective communication is the goal of accent modification.

Dialect and accent modification training are tailored to meet individual needs and may entail instruction in the areas of pronunciation, intonation, syllable stress, fluency, and grammar.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • Evaluation of  the speaker’s communicative strengths and areas for improvement
  • Written report of the assessment results
  • In-person discussion of the instructional goals with client input
  • Instructional plan with client-specific goals based on best teaching practices in the literature
  • Individual and/or group instruction outlined in a course syllabus
  • Instruction provided by trained graduate students supervised by an ASHA certified speech-language pathologist with expertise in the area
  • Progress reports informing clients of progress toward achieving instructional goals.

If you are a full-time UNCG student or faculty, you can enroll in a Dialect/ Foreign Accent Modification course (CSD 219.01) after participating in a screening process to determine if you qualify for the course.
