“I think people really discount hearing and how important it is to your quality of life,” Dr. Amy Myers said.
Dr. Myers is Taaffe’s audiologist at UNCG’s Speech and Hearing Center and has been practicing for over 20 years. According to Dr. Myers, hearing loss is the third most common health condition in the U.S. behind heart disease and arthritis, but it’s also the most untreated.
“Untreated hearing loss really starts to take you away from society, and it can lead to depression,” Dr. Myers said. “Untreated hearing loss can lead to more falls, which can lead to more health concerns. It’s linked to cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cognitive decline.
